This research will inform public health education programs designed to increase health literacy among urban and rural African-American populations with respect to the prevention and detection of Type 2 diabetes as well how people with this disease can maintain good health. The findings will identify the neighborhood characteristics and the communication resources that influence African-Americans abilities to problem solve around issues of Type 2 diabetes. This research can serve as a model for what public health practitioners need to know about a community and its residents before they launch a campaign or intervention.
