This paper details the history of the South Central Farm, a 14-acre urban garden that was destroyed after a lengthy and bitter property rights battle with a Los Angeles developer. The analysis is guided by two complementary theoretical frameworks--James Carey’s (1989) conception of the ritual and transmission views of communication, as well as Logan & Molotch’s (1987) treatment of use and exchange value in the urban growth machine.

Moran, M. (2010). Linking Social Identity to Three Theories of Behavioral Prediction. Paper presented at the National Communication Association Conference, San Francisco, CA.

This paper draws on the fields of social psychology, public health and marketing to examine how communication scholars can use social identity to produce effective health campaigns.
