Metamorphosis members use communications research to promote civic engagement in Alhambra, CA
November 20, 2008

Members of the Metamorphosis Project have been working on “The Alhambra Project” with the goal of reaching out to Alhambra’s diverse communities through exploring “new media and traditional communication channels” to promote civic engagement “in an innovative way”. The following is the project synopsis:

The Alhambra Project
Synopsis

This project is a collaboration between the School of Journalism and the Metamorphosis Project in the Annenberg School for Communication. It is a study in the re-localization of news that is approached from a communication infrastructure approach (see: metamorph.org).

Our goal is to promote civic engagement in the City of Alhambra by utilizing new media and traditional communication channels in an innovative way. Located in Los Angeles County, Alhambra is a residential area where new and settled immigrants of Chinese, Latino, Anglo and other ethnic origins share their daily lives. The cultural and linguistic diversity in Alhambra creates challenges for developing appropriate communication channels that would reach residents of different backgrounds and stimulate civic collaboration and participation among them.

Our initial research indicates that that there is little in the way of local storytelling going on in Alhambra and the little there is, is linguistically isolated to English, Mandarin, Cantonese or Spanish. We hope that we can develop a sustainable multi-lingual local news venue that is grounded in the shared concerns of Alhambra residents. At present, we are identifying the major community organizations, resident groups, community institutions, and businesses that play important roles in Alhambra. These players will be asked to guide the development of the new media venue and, once developed, to be participants in the construction of ‘Alhambra News(tm).
