Dr. Sandra Ball-Rokeach, Dr. Yong-Chan Kim (University of Iowa) and
Dr. Holley Wilkin (Georgia State University) have submitted a grant
titled “Diabetes Literacy as a Function of Where African Americans
Live and How They Communicate” to the N.I.H. This grant proposes to
study diabetes in three African American communities: the Crenshaw
area of Los Angeles, Atlanta and Wilcox County in Alabama. This
research will inform public health education programs designed to
increase health literacy among urban and rural African American
populations with respect to the prevention and detection of Type 2
diabetes, as well as how people with this disease can maintain good
health. The findings will identify the neighborhood characteristics
and the communication resources that influence African Americans’
abilities to problem solve around issues of Type 2 diabetes. This
research can serve as a model for what public health practitioners
need to know about a community and its residents before they launch a
campaign or intervention.
