Nancy Chen, Andrea Wenzel and Nan Zhao are the recipients of this year’s ICA James W. Carey Urban Communication Grant. Using this grant, they will work with the other researchers from the Alhambra Project to explore the potential of “place-based” and “solutions-oriented” storytelling in promoting civic engagement in Alhambra, a diverse urban/suburban community characteristic of the sprawling metropolis of Los Angeles. The Alhambra Project is a research-based local news initiative conceived by Professors Sandra Ball-Rokeach and Michael Parks to tackle the challenge of building civically-engaged local communities under the forces of globalization and population diversity.
